Septic Tank and Ireland

Why are so many people against this charge for regulating septic tanks in Ireland?
Is it that some of them already know that the tanks that they have are causing problems which they would prefer to ignore or is it that there may be some 'other' planning issue on their property which has not been notified to the appropriate authorities?

  1. A septic tank is not a ‘fit and forget’ item and needs to be maintained properly if it is to perform well and not pollute groundwater.
Many people make the mistake of ignoring their septic tank system until it is too late – an expensive mistake and then they grumble that they have to pay for it. The rest of Europe has had to pay charges for septic tank consents for decades and we are begining to catch up. My neighbours new septic tank near Charleville poisoned my borehole within 3 months because the soakaway drainfield was put in the wrong place and I had to connect to the mains at great expense – I only wish the rules had been tighter earlier
